About mid-week I put out an invitation to join Shirley and me for a lunch ride to Glacier Point in Yosemite for the coming Saturday. We met up with Bill & Linda Androws, Susie Coles and Bruce Howland at the Quik Stop on Vasco Road just north of I580. We were on the road by 7:30 am and at the Yosemite entrance by 10. Bob Tobin had already planned to run up to Glacier Point the same day although he had planned to leave a little earlier. 5 am was a little too early for me, but we did pass each other on his way back around 10:15 am.
It was another one of those beautiful crystal clear day riding up to the mountains. The view from Glacier Point was spectacular. Having visited Yosemite for as many years as Bruce has this was his first visit to Glacier Point. I'm sure he'll have to make a point of taking Susan for a visit.
Our ride back was to be along the Merced river and to the town of Mariposa and stop for ice cream. But the direction I was taking was overridden and we instead took 141 that took us to Oakhurst instead. Nonetheless, it was an interesting ride. First off there was a lot of road work being done and a good amount of riding was done on unpaved road with a lot of loose gravel. When we arrived at Oakhurst we couldn't find an ice cream parlor so we ended up at the VON super market that had a Starbucks and we had Frappacinos. Except Bill, he got himself a pint of Ben & Jerry's (he was the smart one). Our ride home took us through Raymond Road, an excellent motorcycle road with a lot of undulating curbs and just an overall nice ride on two wheels. The temps were for the most part very pleasant with the exception of the final stretch home on Hwy 99. A stop at a rest area for a little water and cool grass about 70 miles south of Modesto was a welcome relief. - Alan
